Pyrola japonica

[Overview]
A perennial 15–25 cm tall, found in forests at low elevations in the mountains.
The winter buds are incompletely enclosed by scale leaves.
The leaves are simple and arranged in a rosette, 3–6 cm long and 2–4 cm wide, elliptic, with fine teeth on the margin.
The upper surface of the leaves often has white patches along the veins.
The leaf stalk is thick, 2.5–5 cm long.
The flower stem stands upright from among the leaves and has either no scale leaves or a single pointed, lanceolate scale leaf.
The scale leaf often becomes leaf-like and has a distinct midrib.
A raceme bears 3–10 white flowers; the corolla is broadly bell-shaped and 5-lobed.
There are 10 stamens.
There is 1 pistil, longer than the stamens, with a curved style.
The sepals are about 2–3 times as long as they are wide, lanceolate and pointed at the tip.
The fruit is an oblate capsule 0.6–0.7 cm in diameter.

[Uses]
The whole plant is used medicinally.
