[Overview]
An annual 20–80 cm tall, growing in moist places in the mountains.
The nodes of the stem are swollen.
The leaves are simple and alternate, rhombic-elliptic, 4–17 cm long and 2–7 cm wide, usually with white curly hairs on the veins on both surfaces.
The leaf margins are serrated.
The leaf stalks are 1–5 cm long.
Racemes hang down from the leaf axils and bear 3–10 flowers.
The flowers are tubular, 3.5–4 cm long, reddish purple to pale reddish purple or white.
There are purple spots inside the flower.
Behind the flower is a spur that stores nectar; its tip curls inward but does not form a spiral.
The flowers bloom hidden beneath the leaves.
The fruit is a spindle-shaped capsule 1.5–2 cm long; when a ripe fruit is touched, it splits open and scatters the seeds.
