Thlaspi arvense

[Overview]
A biennial 10–80 cm tall, found in fields and similar places on flat land.
It gives off a foul smell when rubbed.
The whole plant is hairless and tinged with white, and the stem branches in the upper part.
There are basal leaves and stem leaves, somewhat thick and glossy; the basal leaves are oblong to oblanceolate and have leaf stalks.
The leaves on the stem are simple and alternate, long ovate to lanceolate, with sparse low teeth on the margin, and the leaf base spreads out like an ear and clasps the stem.
Racemes at the stem tips bear white four-petaled flowers about 4–5 mm across.
The fruit is flat, shaped like a war fan (gunbai), about 1.5 cm across, with a notched tip, divided into two chambers left and right, each containing 5–7 seeds.

[History]
It is already recorded in the Edo period and is said to have been naturalized in ancient times.
