[Overview]
A biennial 30–60 cm tall, found on sandy seashores.
The root is cylindrical and rather thick.
The stems and leaves bear coarse hairs.
The leaves arise from the root in a rosette, are 10–20 cm long, and are pinnately divided to the midrib.
The flowers are borne in racemes at the stem tips and are pale reddish purple and four-petaled.
The fruit is a silique 5–8 cm long, constricted between the seeds like a string of beads, with a long beak-like tip, and does not split open even when ripe.
Each fruit contains 2–5 spherical seeds.
The fruit wall becomes spongy when dry and floats on seawater.
