Diplomorpha sikokiana ("Ganpi")

Japanese name: ガンピ (雁皮)
Scientific name: Diplomorpha sikokiana

Diplomorpha sikokiana

[Overview]
A deciduous shrub 1–2 m tall, found in sunny places such as serpentine areas.
The bark resembles that of Sakura.
The current year's branches do not branch and are densely covered with appressed silky hairs.
The leaves are simple and alternate, ovate, 1.5–8 cm long and 1–4 cm wide, densely covered on both sides with appressed silky hairs, so they look whitish.
The leaf margins are entire.
There is a very short petiole.
Heads at the branch tips bear 7–20 flowers.
The flowers have no petals; the tubular calyx, 4-lobed at the tip, is colored pale yellow.
The outside of the calyx is densely covered with appressed silky hairs.
The fruit is a drupe enclosed in the calyx tube.

[Uses]
The bark is a raw material for washi (Japanese paper).
