Erodium ×variabile ("Benibanafuro")

Japanese name: ベニバナフウロ (紅花風露)
Scientific name: Erodium ×variabile

Erodium ×variabile

[Overview]
A perennial with creeping stems that spreads into a mat or cushion about 15 cm tall and 30 cm wide.
The whole plant is densely hairy.
The leaves are elliptic to ovate, about 2 cm long, shallowly cut, heart-shaped at the base, and have rounded teeth on the margins.
Long flower stalks extend from the leaf axils and bear pale pink, 5-petaled flowers about 1.5–2 cm across.
The petals have darker veins.

[History]
It is a hybrid of Erodium corsicum and E. reichardii.

[Cultivation]
Propagate by division.
It prefers a sunny, airy site with well-drained soil.
For potted plants, water thoroughly when the soil surface dries; for plants in the ground, rainfall is sufficient.
If fertilizer is applied at planting, no further feeding is particularly necessary, but for potted plants, place a small amount of slow-release fertilizer on the soil in spring or autumn, depending on growth.
There are no particular pests or diseases.
