[Overview]
A perennial 5–15 cm tall, found in summergreen forests in the mountains on the Sea of Japan side.
It has no aboveground stem.
It has a creeping rhizome.
The leaves have long petioles and arise from the base; they are round-heart-shaped, 4–9 cm long, somewhat thick, with a deeply heart-shaped base.
The leaf margins have rounded serrations.
At fruiting time the leaves reach 15 cm in length, and the petioles about 20 cm.
The flowers are borne at the tips of flower stalks that stand upright from the leaf axils, 2–2.5 cm across, and white.
The base of the lateral petals is hairless, and the lip petal has purple stripes.
The style is shaped like a mantis's head, with the upper part extending shortly to the left and right, and the stigma is pointed like a beak.
Behind the flower is a short spur 0.4–0.5 cm long.
The fruit is a capsule that splits into 3 when ripe and scatters the seeds.
