Japanese name: アリアケスミレ(有明菫) Scientific name:Viola betonicifolia var. albescens
[Overview]
A perennial that prefers sunny, moist places such as paddy field banks and riverbeds.
It has short underground stems.
The leaves are basal with long petioles, linear-lanceolate, 4–7 cm long and about 2 cm wide, with low serrations on the margins.
The leaves produced during the fruiting season have a base that spreads out like ears, making them triangular-lanceolate.
The stipules are lanceolate.
The flowers are borne at the tips of erect flower stalks 5–15 cm long, are about 2 cm across, and open facing sideways.
The flower color varies, from almost white to flowers with conspicuous purple streaks.
There is a thick, short spur at the back of the flower.
The fruit is a capsule that splits into 3 when ripe and scatters the seeds.
