Japanese name: ナガバタチツボスミレ (長葉立壺菫)
Scientific name: Viola ovato-oblonga

Viola ovato-oblonga

[Overview]
A perennial growing in hills and mountains, preferring well-drained partial shade.
The underground stem is short and somewhat woody.
The aerial stems grow in clumps and are about 10–15 cm tall, though depending on the environment some reach 40 cm.
The basal leaves are round-heart-shaped, 2–3 cm wide, with low teeth on the leaf margin.
The stem leaves are narrowly triangular-ovate to lanceolate.
The stipules are somewhat coarsely pinnately divided.
The flowers are borne at the tips of upright flower stalks; they are pale purple and 1.5–2 cm across.
Behind the flower extends a spur 7–8 mm long.
The fruit is a capsule that splits into 3 when ripe and scatters the seeds.

[Notes]
The name comes from the slender stem leaves.
