Viola grayi ("Isosumire")

Japanese name: イソスミレ (磯菫)
Scientific name: Viola grayi

[Overview]
A perennial growing in sandy soil on the coast.
It has sturdy, long underground stems and roots firmly in the sand.
The aboveground stems grow in clusters and reach 5–10 cm in height.
The leaves are basal with petioles, round-heart-shaped, about 1.5–3.5 cm wide, with low serrations on the margin.
The leaves are thick and glossy, and curl toward the upper side.
The stipules are deeply pinnately divided.
The flowers are borne at the tips of erect flower stalks, about 2–2.5 cm across, and open facing sideways.
The flowers are pale purple to purplish red, and the petals are round, sometimes with wavy margins.
A white spur about 5 mm long extends behind the flower.
The fruit is a capsule that splits into 3 when ripe and scatters the seeds.
