[Overview]
A violet found at forest edges and in grasslands in the mountains, a perennial 10–30 cm tall.
It has thick, creeping underground stems.
It has aerial stems.
The leaves are of two kinds: basal leaves and leaves borne on the stem.
The basal leaves are 3.5–7 cm long and 2–6 cm wide, and the stem leaves are 3–10 cm long and 2.5–9 cm wide; they are heart-shaped to ovate, with coarse wavy serrations on the margins.
Both surfaces of the leaves are hairless.
The petioles are long on the basal leaves and 0.5–2 cm long on the stem leaves, and the stipules are nearly entire.
The flowers are borne at the tips of flower stalks 3–7 cm long, are about 1.5 cm across, and yellow.
The lip petal and lateral petals have purple streaks.
The spur is short.
The fruit is a capsule that splits into 3 when ripe and scatters the seeds.
