Alnus viridis subsp. maximowiczii var. maximowiczii ("Miyamahannoki")
Japanese name: ミヤマハンノキ (深山榛木)
Scientific name: Alnus viridis subsp. maximowiczii var. maximowiczii
[Overview]
A deciduous shrub or small tree 5–8 m tall.
The buds, young branches, undersides of the leaves and so on are sticky.
Shrubby plants branch freely from the base.
The bark is dark brown without fissures, and the lenticels are conspicuous.
The branches grow in a zigzag pattern, and large leaf scars remain densely on the short shoots.
Leaves are simple and alternate, broadly ovate to ovate-round, 5–10 cm long and 4–9 cm wide, slightly glossy, with brown tufts of hair in the vein axils on the underside.
The lateral veins are parallel, in 8–12 pairs.
The leaf margins have fine double serrations.
There are male and female flowers, which bloom at the same time as the leaves unfold.
The male flowers grow on cylindrical catkins 4–5 cm long, which hang down in groups of 2–3 from the branch tips.
The male catkins have no stalk.
The male flowers are small, borne three at a time beside the bracts; the perianth is 5-lobed and there are 5 stamens.
The female flowers grow in cone-like inflorescences, several standing upright at the tips of new shoots that emerge from the leaf axils below the male catkins.
The female inflorescences have a short stalk.
The female flowers have no perianth.
The fruiting spike is elliptical and cone-like, 1–1.5 cm long, with fruits attached to the inner surface of the scales.
The fruit is a flattened nut with a wing on each side and the style remaining at the tip.
