Codariocalyx microphyllus

Codariocalyx microphyllus ("Himenohagi")

Japanese name: ヒメノハギ (姫野萩)
Scientific name: Codariocalyx microphyllus

Codariocalyx microphyllus

[Overview]
A subshrub about 1 m tall, found in sunny places in low mountains.
The stems are reddish brown.
Leaves are alternate and consist of 3 leaflets, but the side leaflets are small and sometimes degenerate, so there may be only 1 leaflet.
The terminal leaflet is elliptical, 0.5–1.5 cm long.
Stipules and stipels are present; the stipules are narrowly lanceolate, about 0.3–0.5 cm long.
Inflorescences emerge from the branch tips and leaf axils, and young inflorescences are enclosed by bracts and so are shaped like pinecones.
The inflorescences and flower stalks have long soft hairs and short hooked hairs.
The flowers are pea-shaped, 0.4–0.5 cm long, and vary in color from white or pale yellow to reddish purple.
The fruit is a legume of 3–4 segments, 1–1.3 cm long and about 3 mm wide, almost hairless or slightly covered with hooked hairs.
The seeds are elliptical and have a membranous aril.
