Japanese name: ヒュウガミズキ(日向水木) Scientific name:Corylopsis pauciflora
[Overview]
A deciduous shrub 1.2–2 m tall.
Young branches are at first covered with short hairs but later become hairless.
It branches freely.
Leaves are simple and alternate, ovate-orbicular, 2–3 cm long and 1.5–2.5 cm wide, with 5–7 lateral veins.
Long appressed hairs grow on the veins on the underside of the leaves.
The leaf margins are serrated.
The petiole is 0.3–0.5 cm long and has long hairs.
The flowers open before the leaves unfold; short racemes 1–2 cm long hang down from the leaf axils of the previous year and bear 2–3 flowers.
The flowers are yellow with 5 petals, and the anthers of the stamens are pale yellow to yellowish brown.
The fruit is a spherical capsule 0.6 cm in diameter.
[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed, by division, or from cuttings.
Sow seeds as soon as they are collected.
It prefers sunny, well-drained, moisture-retentive, well-aerated soil.
Avoid places that receive strong afternoon sun.
For potted plants, water thoroughly when the soil surface dries; for plants in the ground, rainfall is sufficient, but in dry places prevent evaporation with a mulch of straw or similar.
After flowering, apply a small amount of organic fertilizer around the base of the plant as a thank-you fertilizer.
Powdery mildew can occur.
