Japanese name: シナノキンバイ(信濃金梅) Scientific name:Trollius japonicus
[Overview]
A perennial growing in slightly moist grasslands in the alpine zone.
The plant is 20–80 cm tall, but in windswept places such as ridges it is only about 4 cm tall.
It has a short rhizome, which is covered with the fibers of the leaf sheaths of old basal leaves.
There are basal leaves and leaves alternate on the stem; they are circular, 2.5–20 cm across, palmately divided into 3 to the base, and the segments are further pinnately divided, with each segment narrowly lanceolate.
The flowers are yellow, shallow saucer-shaped (parabolic antenna-shaped), 2.5–4.5 cm across, and are borne singly at the stem tip or in groups of 2–3 in a cyme facing upward.
The flowers have 5–7 petal-like sepals.
The true petals are deep yellow to orange, broadly linear to narrowly obovate, 0.5–1 cm long and shorter than the stamens; the limb is erect and the nectary is slightly swollen on the back.
There are 6–22 pistils, and the styles are 1.5–4 mm long, erect and slender.
The fruits are follicles 0.5–1.2 cm long, clustered in a globe; they stand erect when ripe, and the styles are also erect.
