Japanese name: コボタンヅル (小牡丹蔓)
Scientific name: Clematis apiifolia var. biternata

Clematis apiifolia var. biternata

[Overview]
A deciduous to semi-evergreen climbing perennial found at sunny forest edges and in grasslands.
The base of the stem becomes woody.
When the leaf stalks and leaflet stalks touch something to coil around, they elongate and twine around it.
The leaves are opposite and twice ternately compound.
The leaflets are narrowly ovate with a long tail-like pointed tip, and have irregular serrations on the margins.
On the leaf surface the veins are sunken.
Short paniculate cymes arise from the leaf axils of the current year's branches, bearing many upward-facing flowers.
The flowers are white and 1.5–2 cm across; they have no petals and have 4 petal-like sepals.
The sepals are oblong.
The many stamens are conspicuous.
The fruit is an achene.
The long style of the pistil remains on the fruit and becomes feathery with dense hairs.
