Phleum alpinum (alpine cat's-tail, "Miyamaawagaeri")

Japanese name: ミヤマアワガエリ (深山粟還)
Scientific name: Phleum alpinum

Phleum alpinum

[Overview]
A perennial 25–50 cm tall, growing in alpine meadows and gravelly ground.
It has a short rhizome and produces a few culms (stems).
The leaves are narrowly lanceolate, 5–11 cm long and 0.4–0.8 cm wide, and almost smooth.
The leaf sheaths are smooth, with a ligule 1–3 mm long.
The uppermost leaves on the stem are very short, and the middle part of the leaf sheath is swollen.
An elliptical spike 1.5–4.5 cm long is borne at the stem tip, densely set with many spikelets, and is pale green, often tinged with purple.
The spikelets are flattened and obovate, 3–3.8 mm long; the glumes are membranous with long white hairs on the back, and the upper end forms a short awn.
