Beckmannia syzigachne

[Overview]
An annual or biennial 30–90 cm tall, found in wet places such as former rice paddies.
The stem is thick and somewhat soft.
The leaves are linear, about 10–20 cm long and 0.5–1 cm wide.
The ligule is 0.3–0.6 cm long, white and membranous.
The spikelets, 15–35 cm long, are densely arranged in two rows on an erect racemose inflorescence.
Each spikelet consists of one floret, is about 0.3 cm long and flat and round, and two large sac-like glumes enclose the floret.
The tip of the lemma is pointed.
The fruit is pale yellowish brown.

[Notes]
The name compares the appearance of the flower spike to kazunoko (herring roe).
