An annual or biennial 60–100 cm tall, found in fields, roadsides and wasteland.

The leaves are linear, 10–30 cm long and 0.5–1 cm wide.
The ligule is conspicuous, 4 mm high.
It bears panicles 15–30 cm long; the branches of the inflorescence are whorled, and the spikelets, about 2 cm long, hang down with the upper part of the stalk bent.
