Japanese name: サトヤマハリスゲ (里山針菅)
Scientific name: Carex ruralis

[Overview]
A perennial 20–30 cm tall that forms small clumps, growing in damp places in partial shade in the mountains, such as places with standing water, and beside narrow streams.
The stem is somewhat smooth, bluntly three-angled, and often twisted.
The leaves are thread-like and linear, 0.4–0.8 mm wide.
A single spikelet 4–6 mm long is borne at the stem tip, with a very short male flower portion at the top and a female flower portion below it.
The scales of the female flowers are elliptic and easily fall off.
The stigma is divided into 3.
The perigynium is long-ovoid, 2.5–2.8 mm long, and three-angled, with veins on the surface and no glandular dots; its upper end forms a short beak.
