[Overview]
An evergreen perennial 20–40 cm tall.
The rhizome is short and densely tufted, and it does not produce stolons.
The leaves are numerous and dense, linear, about 0.5–1 cm wide, with yellowish white longitudinal stripes.
The leaves are hard, glossy, and rough to the touch.
Spikelets are borne at the stem tip; the terminal spikelet is male and linear, 2–4 cm long, and there are 3–5 lateral spikelets, which are female and short cylindrical.
The perigynia are broadly ovate, about 0.3 cm long, veined, and do not swell even when ripe.
The top of the perigynium forms a beak.

[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed or by division.
The seeds need light to germinate, so cover them with only a very thin layer of soil.
It grows in sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil.
For potted plants, water thoroughly when the soil surface dries; for plants in the ground, rainfall is sufficient once they are established.
If a base fertilizer is applied, no further fertilizing is particularly necessary.
There are no particular pests or diseases.
