Carex lenta var. leucochlora ("Aosuge")

Japanese name: アオスゲ (青菅)
Scientific name: Carex lenta var. leucochlora

[Overview]
A perennial 5–50 cm tall, common in grassland and also growing on lawns and embankments.
It does not produce stolons, and the leaves grow in dense clumps at ground level.
The stem has a pale to brown, slightly glossy sheath at the base.
The leaves are flat and linear, 0.1–0.5 cm wide.
Spikelets are borne at the stem tip; the terminal spikelet is male, pale green, and short-stalked.
The lateral spikelets are female, 1–5 in number, spherical to cylindrical, 1–2 cm long, with leafy bracts, the lowest bract being short.
The perigynium is obovate, about 3 mm long, with short soft hairs and fine, inconspicuous veins, and its upper end forms a short erect beak.
The female scales do not fall off, are longer than the perigynium, and have an awn at the tip.

[Notes]
The Japanese name comes from the plant being green all over.
