[Overview]
A perennial 10–20 cm tall that grows in small clumps on damp slopes with standing water, from the mountains to the subalpine zone.

The leaves are rolled inward and linear, 1 mm or less wide.
The stem tip bears a single ovate spikelet 3–5 mm long, with a very short male portion at the top and the female portion below it.
The scales of the female flowers are broadly ovate and tinged dark brown.
There are no bracts.
The perigynia ascend obliquely and are broadly ovate, 2 mm long, flattened and 3-angled, and pale green; they have no veins, are not inflated, and abruptly form a short beak at the top.
They do not bend downward even when ripe.
