Carex dickinsii ("Onisuge")

Japanese name: オニスゲ (鬼菅)
Scientific name: Carex dickinsii

[Overview]
A perennial 20–50 cm tall, commonly growing in wet ground and alder woods on flatlands.
It sends long stolons underground and forms colonies.
The base of the stem has pale brown sheaths.
The leaves are flat and linear, 0.4–0.8 cm wide, bright yellowish green and glossy.
Spikelets are borne at the stem tip; the terminal spikelet is male and has a long stalk.
The lateral spikelets are female, borne in clusters of 1–3, elliptical, about 2 cm long, and stalkless.
The perigynia are about 1 cm long, large among sedges, glossy and markedly inflated, and the upper end forms a long beak.

[Notes]
The Japanese name comes from the large perigynia, and the alternative name is said to liken the spikelets to Mikuri.
