Ipheion uniflorum

Ipheion uniflorum (spring starflower, "Hananira")

Japanese name: ハナニラ (花韮)
Scientific name: Ipheion uniflorum

Ipheion uniflorum

[Overview]
A perennial about 15–20 cm tall.
The whole plant smells like chives.
Underground it has an egg-shaped, milky-white bulb 1.2–2 cm in diameter.
The leaves are basal, linear, 10–25 cm long, and spread over the ground rather than standing upright.
A flower stalk about 15–20 cm tall is sent up, bearing a single upward-facing flower at its tip.
The flower is a star-shaped, 6-petaled bloom about 5 cm across, white to pale wisteria-blue.
The flowers have a sweet fragrance.
The fruit is a capsule.

[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed or by division of bulbs.
In a sunny, well-drained spot it is not particular about soil, is easy to grow, and spreads readily.
It tolerates dryness, so whether potted or in the ground, watering is not particularly necessary unless sunny weather continues and the soil becomes very dry.
Fertilizing is also sufficient with just slow-release chemical fertilizer as base fertilizer.
There are no particular pests or diseases.
