Platanthera ussuriensis

Platanthera ussuriensis ("Tonboso")

Japanese name: トンボソウ (蜻蛉草)
Scientific name: Platanthera ussuriensis

Platanthera ussuriensis

[Overview]
A perennial 15–35 cm tall, found in deciduous forests such as beech forests in the mountains.
It is a terrestrial orchid.
The roots are thin and creep sideways.
Leaves are simple and alternate; the two leaves on the lower part of the stem, set somewhat close together, are large, oblong to narrowly lanceolate, 8–13 cm long and 1–3 cm wide, with an entire margin.
The several leaves on the upper part of the stem are linear to needle-like and gradually become smaller.
A raceme bears a rather large number of flowers.
The bracts are narrowly lanceolate.
The flowers are pale green; the dorsal sepal and lateral petals form a hood.
The lip is white and divided into 3 lobes from the base.
Behind the flower, a white spur 0.4–0.6 cm long hangs down and curves slightly forward.

[Notes]
The name likens the shape of the flower to a dragonfly.
