Japanese name: コバノトンボソウ(小葉蜻蛉草) Scientific name:Platanthera tipuloides subsp. nipponica
[Overview]
A perennial 20–40 cm tall, found in sunny wetlands and damp grasslands from the mountains to the subalpine zone.
It is a terrestrial orchid.
Part of the root thickens into a spindle shape.
The stem is thin and delicate.
Leaves are simple and alternate; the single leaf on the lower part of the stem is large, broadly linear, 3–7 cm long and 0.5–1.5 cm wide, with an entire margin.
The leaf base forms a sheath that clasps the stem.
The leaves on the upper part of the stem are lanceolate and become small and scale-like, and as they lie along the stem they are inconspicuous.
A raceme bears a few flowers sparsely.
The bracts are lanceolate.
The flowers are pale yellowish green; the dorsal sepal is ovate, the lateral sepals and lateral petals are oblong, and the lip is tongue-shaped and somewhat fleshy.
Behind the flower is a spur 1.2–1.8 cm long, which curves upward.
