Japanese name: ヤマコンニャク(山蒟蒻) Scientific name:Amorphophallus kiusianus
A perennial about 1 m tall, found in somewhat moist evergreen forests in lowlands.
It has a large, flattened-spherical corm and produces small cormlets.
Only one leaf is produced, after flowering, and it withers before the flowers open.
The leaf is divided into three lobes, each lobe further divided in two in an uneven pinnate manner, with tail-like pointed tips.
A flower stalk 1 m tall arises from the base and bears a spadix enclosed in an oblong-ovate spathe 20 cm long.
The spathe is dark green at the base and tinged purple inside, with white spots on both surfaces and a sharply pointed tip.
The spadix is cylindrical, 13–17 cm long, with a blackish-purple appendage 8 cm long, and has a foul smell.
The flowers have no petals and are densely set on the spadix, with a group of female flowers in the lower part and a group of male flowers in the upper part.
The fruit is a broadly elliptical berry 1 cm in diameter and ripens deep blue.
