Japanese name: コバノカナワラビ(小葉金蕨) Scientific name:Arachniodes sporadosora
[Overview]
An evergreen fern that often forms colonies in somewhat dry woods in the mountains.
It has a short rhizome.
The fronds are four times pinnately compound; the lateral pinnae become smaller toward the top, but no terminal pinna is formed.
On the lower side of the base of the lowest lateral pinna there is a pinna of almost the same shape as the lateral pinnae.
The fronds are leathery and hard, glossy on the upper surface, and the margins of the pinnules have teeth ending in short spines.
Small fronds may be only two to three times pinnately compound.
The fertile fronds are somewhat upright, and their pinnules are often smaller.
The sori are borne along the veins near the midrib, and the indusium is round-reniform, entire and hairless.
The stalk may reach 50 cm or more in length, is straw-colored, and has many brown scales on the lower part.
