Blechnum orientale ("Hiryushida")

Japanese name: ヒリュウシダ (飛流羊歯)
Scientific name: Blechnum orientale

Blechnum orientale

An evergreen terrestrial fern found in mountain grasslands, in rather bright forests and forest edges, and along roadsides.
The rhizome is massive, erect or ascending, and bears many scales.
The scales are linear, 2 cm or more long and 1–2 mm wide, narrowing toward the tip, and dark brown.
The margins of the scales are membranous.
The leaves are tufted from the rhizome; the petiole is thick, 60 cm long, straw-colored to pale reddish brown, and densely covered with scales at the base.
Young petioles may be tinged with purple.
The leaves are lanceolate, 60–150 cm long and 25–45 cm wide, once pinnately compound.
There are 30–50 pairs of pinnae, ascending relative to the axis.
Each pinna is rather thick; large ones are linear, 30 cm long and 1.2–2 cm wide, narrowing toward the tip, with entire margins.
In addition, projections, which are vestigial pinnae, are attached nearly to the base of the petiole.
The sori extend long along both sides of the main vein and are about 0.7 mm wide.
