Athyrium sinense ("Ezomeshida")

Japanese name: エゾメシダ (蝦夷雌羊歯)
Scientific name: Athyrium sinense

A summer-green fern 40–80 cm tall, growing in mountain forests.
It is commonly seen in the subalpine zone of Hokkaido, where it prefers the moist environment of Dake-kanba–Miyama-hannoki forests.

The rhizome is ascending, and the fronds grow in tufts.
The stipe is as long as the frond or about 1/2 its length and is often tinged reddish brown; the scales are lanceolate, brown to dark brown, hardly twisted, and are mostly borne at the base of the stipe.
The fronds, in large specimens up to 60 cm long and 40 cm wide, are broadly ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate and three times pinnately moderately to deeply divided. The lower pinnae do not point downward.
The sori are arranged in one row midway between the pinnule margin and the midrib. The indusium is curved in a half-moon or hook shape, and its margin is finely split into hair-like segments.

It can be distinguished from Miyama-meshida by its scales.
