[Overview]
An evergreen fern found in grasslands and on the forest floor in the subalpine to alpine zone, growing especially in somewhat dry places such as the floor of creeping pine forests.
It often grows in colonies.
The stem has a main axis (creeping stem) that runs long along the ground and side branches (erect stems) that stand up.
The main axis is about 0.2 cm across, branches sparsely, and bears somewhat spreading leaves.
The side branches branch once to several times, rising obliquely to about 10–15 cm tall.
The leaves on the side branches are whorled, linear-lanceolate with pointed tips, about 0.3–1 cm long, deep green and hard, and spreading or recurved.
The leaf margin has minute teeth.
The sporangial spike is cylindrical and stalkless, borne singly at the tip of a twig, and the sporophylls are broadly ovate.
