Nicotiana ×sanderae

Nicotiana ×sanderae ("Hanatabako")

Japanese name: ハナタバコ (花煙草)
Scientific name: Nicotiana ×sanderae

Nicotiana ×sanderae

[Overview]
It is grown as a spring-sown annual or an autumn-sown biennial.
The leaves are simple, alternate and entire.
Racemes or panicles are produced at the tips of upright flower stalks.
The flowers are salverform with a long tube, and the tip of the corolla is divided into 5 star-shaped lobes.
The fruit is a capsule.

[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed.
The seeds need light to germinate, so sow them on seed-starting soil without covering them with soil, and water from the bottom so the soil does not dry out.
For autumn sowing, protect from frost.
It prefers fertile soil with plenty of sun, good drainage and good ventilation.
For potted plants, water thoroughly when the soil surface dries; for plants in the ground, rainfall is sufficient.
Apply slow-release chemical fertilizer placed on the soil during the growing period.
Pests include aphids and the cotton bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera).
