Petrorhagia nanteuilii (childing pink, "Michibatanadeshiko")

Japanese name: ミチバタナデシコ (道端撫子)
Scientific name: Petrorhagia nanteuilii

[Overview]
A biennial 50 cm tall, found along roadsides, on waste ground and on riverbanks.
The stem branches well from the base; some plants are hairy and some are not.
The leaves are simple and opposite, linear, 1–7 cm long.
The leaf bases are fused and wrap around the stem, and the sheath is about 1.5–2 times as long as it is wide.
A spherical inflorescence about 2 cm across is borne at the stem tip.
The inflorescence is enclosed by overlapping membranous bracts, and the flowers show between them.
The flowers are pale pink and five-petaled, and the tip of each petal is shallowly 2-lobed.
The fruit is a capsule, and when ripe the upper end splits into 4.
The seeds are shield-shaped, and the back has fine wart-like projections.
