Echinopsis (genus, hedgehog cactus)

Japanese name: エキノプシス
Scientific name: Echinopsis

Echinopsis

[Overview]
A cactus.
The plant body is spherical and in many cases later becomes cylindrical.
It freely produces offsets.
The ribs are usually distinct.
There are areoles on the ribs, bearing sharp spines.
The flowers bloom mainly from the sides or the base of the plant; they are long, funnel-shaped, large, and white or pale pink.

[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed or by cuttings (offsets).
It prefers a sunny, well-ventilated place and should be planted in well-drained, well-aerated soil.
From spring to early summer, excluding midsummer, when the soil dries, water until it runs out of the bottom of the pot.
In midsummer keep it somewhat on the dry side, and if watering, do so in the morning or evening so that it does not become stuffy from steam.
From autumn to winter, watering once every 2 weeks to 1 month is sufficient.
Care is needed not to overwater or overfertilize.
Pests include scale insects and spider mites.
