Bulbine frutescens ("Hanaaroe")

Japanese name: ハナアロエ
Scientific name: Bulbine frutescens

Bulbine frutescens

[Overview]
A perennial 40 cm tall.
It is somewhat succulent.
The aboveground parts die back in summer and the plant goes dormant.
The leaves are 4–22 cm long, thick, linear and bluish green.
A raceme 15–30 cm long at the tip of the flower stalk bears many yellow to orange 6-petaled flowers 0.7–1 cm across.
The flowers open in a star shape, and the densely hairy yellow stamens are conspicuous.
Each flower withers in a day, but flowers open one after another.
The fruit is a capsule.

[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed, by division, or by stem cuttings.
It can overwinter outdoors in regions without frost.
It prefers a sunny, well-drained site.
It tolerates dryness but dislikes excess moisture.
For potted plants, water when the soil surface dries in spring and autumn, withhold water during summer dormancy, and keep it on the dry side in winter.
For plants in the ground, rainfall is sufficient.
In autumn, apply slow-release chemical fertilizer placed on the soil.
There are no particular pests or diseases.
