The leaves are simple and alternate, spatulate to rhombic, with a few teeth at the margin.
Racemes arise from the leaf axils.
The flowers are 4-petaled, about 2 cm across, and wisteria-colored to deep pink.
The fruit is a silique.
[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed, by division, or by stem cuttings.
It prefers sun, good air circulation, and well-drained soil.
It is sensitive to summer humidity and excess fertilizer.
For potted plants, take care not to let them become too humid, water thoroughly after the soil has dried, and place them where they will not get rain during the rainy season or long rainy spells.
For plants in the ground, rainfall is sufficient.
In autumn, apply slow-release fertilizer placed on the soil.
Remove spent flowers promptly.
Pests and diseases include gray mold, aphids and diamondback moths.
