Radermachera peninsularis
Japanese name: ラデルマケラ ペニンシュラリス
Scientific name: Radermachera peninsularis
[Overview]
An evergreen shrub to tree 4–15 m tall, but it drops its leaves when the temperature falls.
The leaves are opposite and twice odd-pinnately compound, as much as 60–80 cm long.
The leaflets are oblong to elliptic, 5–7 cm long and 2–4 cm wide, hairless and glossy on the upper surface, with wavy, entire margins.
The leaflets have short leaflet stalks.
Panicles are borne at the branch tips.
The flowers are pale pink to white with yellow streaks in the throat, bell-shaped and two-lipped, about 6–7 cm long and 4 cm across, with 5 lobes at the tip.
The corolla lobes are rounded.
The calyx is tubular and deeply 2-lobed.
The fruit is a slender, hanging capsule, and the seeds are winged.
[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed, by cuttings, or by layering.
It tolerates temperatures down to about 5°C, so bring it into a sunny room in winter.
It prefers a sunny, well-drained soil.
Take care not to overwater; for potted plants, from spring to autumn water thoroughly when the soil surface dries, and keep it on the dry side in winter.
From spring to autumn, place slow-release fertilizer on the soil once a month.
There are no particular pests or diseases.
[Notes]
It resembles Sendan-kisasage, but in Sendan-kisasage the corolla is about 8–12 cm long and salverform, with the tube gradually widening.
