Leucanthemum ×superbum

Leucanthemum ×superbum (Shasta daisy)

Japanese name: シャスタ デージー
Scientific name: Leucanthemum ×superbum

Leucanthemum ×superbum

[Overview]
A perennial 20–80 cm tall.
The base of the stem is woody, and the whole plant is hairless.
There are basal leaves and stem leaves; the basal leaves are oblanceolate with coarse teeth on the margin and have petioles.
The stem leaves are alternate and have no petioles.
The flower heads are about 5–10 cm across.
The ray florets around the edge of the head are white, and the central tubular florets are yellow.
There are also double-flowered and clove-type horticultural cultivars.

[History]
It is a hybrid created by the famous American breeder Luther Burbank.
It is said to have been obtained by crossing Leucanthemum vulgare with Leucanthemum maximum and Leucanthemum lacustre, and then crossing the result with Hama-giku.

[Cultivation]
Propagate by division or stem cuttings.
It prefers fertile soil that is sunny and well drained, but avoid strong afternoon sun in summer.
For potted plants, water thoroughly when the soil surface dries; for plants in the ground, rainfall is sufficient.
Apply base fertilizer, and in spring apply slow-release fertilizer.
Aphids can occur.
