Helenium (genus)

Japanese name: ヘレニウム
Scientific name: Helenium

Helenium

[Overview]
An annual or perennial about 1 m tall.
The stem branches in the upper part.
The leaves are simple and alternate, with entire or toothed margins.
Flower heads are borne at the stem tips, and the ray florets around each head are shallowly 3–5-lobed.
The tubular florets at the center rise in a hemispherical mound.
The fruit is an achene.

[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed or by division.
In a sunny, well-drained place it is not particular about soil, and if the conditions suit it, it grows well even when left alone.
Watering is not particularly necessary for established plants; rainfall is sufficient.
Too much fertilizer makes the plant taller and bushier and more likely to fall over, so none is particularly needed.
Powdery mildew can occur.
