Lavatera

Lavatera (genus)

Japanese name: ラバテラ
Scientific name: Lavatera

Lavatera

[Overview]
Annuals to shrubs.
The leaves are alternate with long petioles, and are ovate to palmately lobed in some cases.
Racemes arise at the stem tips and leaf axils and bear 5-petaled flowers.
The staminal column does not protrude beyond the flower.
The fruit is a schizocarp.

[Cultivation]
Propagate annuals from seed, and perennials and shrubs by cuttings.
It can overwinter outdoors in regions without frost.
It prefers sunny, well-drained soil.
It prefers a rather dry environment, so beware of excess moisture; for potted plants, water after the soil has dried, and for plants in the ground, rainfall is sufficient.
Apply base fertilizer, and for perennials and shrubs also place slow-release fertilizer on the soil in spring.
Leafrollers can occur.
