Faucaria (genus)

Japanese name: フォーカリア
Scientific name: Faucaria

Faucaria

[Overview]
An evergreen perennial.
A succulent plant.
The leaves are densely arranged in 2–4 pairs, decussate and opposite, triangular and thick.
The upper surface of the leaves is flat or covered with papillae.
The leaf tip is chin-shaped and connects to the keel on the back, and the leaf margins have toothed projections.
The flowers are large, yellow or white, with no distinction between sepals and petals.

[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed or by division.
It prefers a sunny, well-drained, well-ventilated environment.
In winter, bring it indoors to a bright windowsill, ideally keeping it at 5°C or above.
If protected from frost and cold wind, it can also overwinter outdoors in areas south of Kanto.
Place pots on a shelf or similar so air can reach the bottom, and move them out of the rain during long rainy spells.
Water thoroughly only after the soil in the pot has dried all the way through.
It dislikes heat and humidity, so in summer place it in an airy partial shade and get it through the season by keeping it on the dry side, watering once a month.
Fertilizer is not particularly necessary.
Pests and diseases include aphids, spider mites and scale insects.
