Sansevieria kirkii

Sansevieria kirkii (star sansevieria)

Japanese name: サンセヴィエリア キルキー
Scientific name: Sansevieria kirkii

Sansevieria kirkii

[Overview]
A perennial.
It has a short, hard rhizome and extends stolons to form offsets.
The leaves are simple and grow in a rosette; they are thick and hard, with brown horizontal stripes.
A conical inflorescence at the tip of the flower stalk bears greenish-white flowers with 6 petals.
The flowers are fragrant.
The fruit is a berry.

[Cultivation]
Propagate by division or leaf cuttings, done when the temperature is 15°C or higher; spring to summer is the most suitable time.
For overwintering, bring it indoors into a sunny place and keep it at 5°C or higher.
It prefers sunny, well-drained, clayey soil.
It dislikes excess moisture.
Poor light makes the leaves weak, but variegated cultivars get leaf scorch in strong direct summer sun, so shade them in midsummer.
Take care not to overwater; from spring to autumn water when the soil surface dries, and keep it on the dry side in winter.
Apply liquid fertilizer once every 2 weeks from spring to autumn.
Pests and diseases include scale insects, aphids and spider mites.
