Torilis scabra ("Oyabujirami")

Japanese name: オヤブジラミ (雄藪虱)
Scientific name: Torilis scabra

Torilis scabra

[Overview]
A biennial 30–70 cm tall, found in vacant lots and along roadsides.
The stems and leaves are tinged with purple.
The stem is erect and much branched.
The leaves are alternate and 3 times ternately pinnately compound.
The leaflets are finely cut and thin.
Short hairs grow abundantly on the leaves, leaf axes and petioles.
Compound umbels bear small white 5-petaled flowers.
There are 2–4 pedicels, fewer than in Yabu-jirami.
The flowers are often tinged with purple.
The fruit is elliptic, densely covered with hooked bristles, which let it be carried off on clothing and animals.
At fruiting time the pedicels are longer than in Yabu-jirami.
It resembles Yabu-jirami, but can be distinguished by its smaller number of pedicels, earlier flowering season and longer fruit stalks.
