Cicuta virosa

Cicuta virosa (cowbane, "Dokuzeri")

Japanese name: ドクゼリ (毒芹)
Scientific name: Cicuta virosa

Cicuta virosa

[Overview]
A perennial about 1 m tall, growing in wetlands.
It has a thick underground stem with hollow internodes.
The stem is hollow and branches.
The leaves are alternate and 2- to 3-times pinnately compound; the leaflets are oblong-lanceolate, 3–8 cm long and 0.5–2 cm wide, with serrate margins.
Compound umbels at the stem tip bear many small white flowers.
There are no involucral bracts, and there are several bractlets.
The fruit is an oblate mericarp.

[Notes]
The whole plant is poisonous, and because the young shoots resemble seri (Japanese parsley), accidental poisonings have been reported.
It is distinguished by the lack of a seri-like fragrance and by its bamboo-jointed rhizome.
