Weigela maximowiczii ("Kibanautsugi")

Japanese name: キバナウツギ (黄花空木)
Scientific name: Weigela maximowiczii

A deciduous shrub 2–3 m tall, growing in deep mountains.
Young branches are green and ridged, with hairs on the ridges.
Leaves are simple and opposite, elliptic to lanceolate, 3.5–9 cm long and 1–4 cm wide, with serrate margins.
Both sides of the leaf are hairy, and the hairs are especially noticeable on the midrib of the underside.
Corymbs arise from the leaf axils and branch tips, each bearing 2–3 flowers.
The flowers are pale yellow and funnel-shaped, 5-lobed and two-lipped, with an orange net-like pattern on the inside of the central lobe of the lower lip.
The upper third of the corolla tube swells like a bell.
The capsule is a slender cylinder 2–3 mm in diameter, and the seeds are 2.5–3.5 mm long with short wings.
The very similar Ukon-utsugi can be distinguished by the upper two thirds of its corolla tube being swollen, its calyx remaining after flowering, its spindle-shaped capsule, and the long wings at both ends of its seeds.
