Adenophora remotiflora ("Sobana")

Japanese name: ソバナ (岨菜、蕎麦菜)
Scientific name: Adenophora remotiflora

Adenophora remotiflora

[Overview]
A perennial 50–100 cm tall, growing in slightly moist places such as inside Buna forests in the mountains.
The upper part of the stem leans over and branches sparsely.
Leaves are simple and alternate, ovate, 2–10 cm long, with serrated margins.
They have long petioles.
A raceme to panicle at the stem tip bears flowers sparsely.
The flowers are bell-shaped, 2–4 cm long, and bluish purple.
The style usually does not protrude from the flower.
The fruit is a capsule.

[Uses]
The root is used medicinally.
The young shoots can be eaten as wild vegetables.

[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed.
It prefers well-drained soil.
A place that is sunny in spring and partly shaded in summer suits it, so when planting in the ground, it is best to plant it under deciduous trees.
For potted plants, water thoroughly when the soil surface dries; for plants in the ground, watering is not particularly necessary unless sunny weather continues and the soil dries out.
Apply oil cake in spring.
There are no particular pests or diseases.
