Premna microphylla ("Hamakusagi")

Japanese name: ハマクサギ (浜臭木)
Scientific name: Premna microphylla

[Overview]
A deciduous small tree 3–9 m tall, found at forest edges along the coast.
The leaves smell when crushed.
Young branches are slightly hairy.
Leaves are simple and opposite, broadly ovate to ovate-elliptic, 4–12 cm long and 2.5–7 cm wide, thin in texture, and hairless on both sides.
The leaf margins are entire, but young trees produce a few coarse teeth.
Pale yellow flowers bloom in panicles at the branch tips; the corolla tube is 0.7–0.8 cm long and the tip is 4-lobed.
The fruit is small and round, ripening to blackish purple.

[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed.
It prefers sunny, well-drained soil.
For potted plants, water thoroughly when the soil surface dries; for plants in the ground, rainfall is sufficient unless sunny weather continues and the soil becomes dry.
Apply organic fertilizer in winter.
There are no particular pests or diseases.
