[Overview]
An evergreen perennial 10–40 cm tall, found in slightly moist places in evergreen broadleaf forests and cedar forests.
The stems, leaves and flowers turn reddish when dried.
The base of the stem becomes woody, the lower part creeps along the ground and roots, and the upper part stands upright.
The leaves are simple and opposite, 2–11 cm long and 1–4.5 cm wide, ovate to lanceolate; the leaf shape varies greatly, the tip is pointed, the upper surface is slightly glossy, and the underside is hairy.
The leaf margin is entire.
A cyme of the scorpioid type at the stem tip bears white or pale pink flowers, and the inflorescence has linear bracts and bractlets.
The corolla is funnel-shaped, 1–1.5 cm long, with 5 lobes at the tip; the outer surface is almost hairless, and the flower stalk is very short.
There are 5 stamens.
The flowers come in two types: long-styled flowers (with a long pistil and short stamens) and short-styled flowers (with a short pistil and long stamens).
The fruit is a flattened, inverted-triangular capsule.
