Japanese name: ジムカデ(地蜈蚣、地百足) Scientific name:Harrimanella stelleriana
[Overview]
An evergreen dwarf shrub 3–7 cm tall, growing on alpine rocky ground.
In heavy-snow areas on the Sea of Japan side, it forms carpet-like colonies together with Aonotsugazakura and others in hollows around snowfields above the subalpine zone.
The stems are thin and wiry, densely branched, and creep long distances along the ground.
Leaves are densely arranged alternately in a spiral, linear to narrowly oblong, 2–3 mm long.
The flowers are borne singly at the tips of obliquely rising stems, facing sideways to downward.
The corolla is white, 5 mm long, broadly bell-shaped and deeply 5-lobed.
There are 10 stamens.
The calyx is reddish purple.
The fruit is a spherical capsule 4 mm in diameter, borne upward.
[Notes]
The Japanese name likens its creeping form to a centipede.
